ABOUT SUSAN
Currently based in Portland, Oregon, Susan Nettelbeck works with acrylics, textured surfaces, mixed media and photography. Her art has been described as healing and spiritual. Although that is not her intention, she admits it is part of the circle of creation. To create to give to others, in that gift, is returned, and the circle is complete. Her work invites exchange, connection, insight and delight—Susan’s way of making art accessible and available to all who are lucky enough to come across it.
Born in Chicago, her family moved to Southern California in the early 60's. Creativity and art is a long family tradition. As a child, Susan was influenced by her older brother, F.A. Nettelbeck--a prolific beat poet and purist, who would hang with the likes of Ginsberg, Burroughs and Micheline. Musicians and artists flowed in and out of her teenage existence. Her German immigrant grandfather was a traveling artist who slept inside viaducts and painted huge murals inside railroad tunnels throughout the Chicago area. Her aunt taught art classes in Chicago for over 20 years, teaching successive generations.
In her late 20’s, Susan moved to San Francisco. While working in a traditional day job managing businesses for over 20 years, she obtained her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, established an art studio at Hunters Point and exhibit in various San Francisco galleries. After over 20 years in the Bay Area, Susan moved to Portland, Oregon to raise her brother’s pre-teen daughter. Susan continues her artistic practice today and maintains an active studio at NW Marine Art Works in NW Portland.
